One of the oldest pubs in town (it is said to have opened in 1806), The Briton’s Protection has seen plenty of history in the more than 200 years since. The walls tell their own story, as murals commemorate the tragic Peterloo Massacre of 1819. The interior has barely changed since the 1930s, making this a time machine and a tourist attraction in its own right, and one that happens to serve some great ale. It doesn’t get any more old fashioned than The Briton’s Protection.
