We like old things here at In Your Pocket, especially when we’re talking about places that can legitimately be described as the oldest of their kind. Chetham’s Library is one such place, thought to be the oldest library in the United Kingdom with more than 350 years of book lending behind it. It was established in 1653 by a bloke by the name of Humphrey Chetham, and it has since grown into one of the most beloved buildings in Manchester. More than 100,000 volumes of print are found within this living museum, one that is a must for any self-respecting bookworm. Do make a note of the entry times though, they can be a little awkward for some.
