The Lower Vítkovice area – a revitalized former steelworks and coal mining complex in the heart of Ostrava city centre – offers enough for a full day of unforgettable experiences. After reliving Ostrava’s industrial past at the former blast furnace (now a national cultural monument), you can admire the historic gas holder now converted into a multifunctional auditorium known as the Gong – a popular venue for education, culture, events, conferences, congresses and exhibitions of all kinds. Finish your day at the Small World of Technology, a fascinating interactive exhibition themed around the works of Jules Verne, showing how various inventions have driven the development of Czech industry and technology through the centuries. The Lower Vítkovice area covers 150 hectares, and new projects are still in progress! The “Triple Hall” – a former power plant at the Karolina complex – is being transformed into an exciting multifunctional public space (opening scheduled for 2014), and the Big World of Technology will follow soon after.
