A sombre memorial located in the village of the same name (itself named after an army commander) paying homage to the tumult and violence Cyprus has suffered over the centuries, the Karaoğlanoğlu Cemetery holds the bodies of soldiers who died defending the Turkish population in 1974. The two columns are said to represent an open door to Turkey, while the adjoining museum collection includes abandoned Greek military vehicles, as well as photos and artefacts from the conflict. The nearby Peace and Freedom Icon marks the very spot where Turkish forces landed in 1974.
