Selim II Mosque & Islamic Cultural Centre

The largest mosque on the sprawling Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) campus located on the northwest outskirts of Famagusta proper, it's a bit off the beaten path for most visitors to the city, but an essential stop for those interested in modern architecture, especially that of the religious variety. Foregoing the usual curved domes and round minarets that have long been typical of Turkish-built mosques, the Selim II Mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre boasts an interesting geometric design, which you'd much more commonly find in sub-Saharan Africa or southeast Asia. Its appearance is made all the more striking by the fact that it's surrounded by a large empty space.
