Rearing up somewhat abruptly as you ascent Groda's main street from Trg svetog Stjepana, the Benedictine Monastery was established in 1664 in a building bequeathed by Julija, daughter-in-law of poet and nobleman Hannibal Lucić. The Church of St Anthony the Abbot an St John the Baptist stands next door. The unique Hvar style of lace-making, fashioned from strands of shredded Agave, has been practiced by the nuns since the 19th century, and was added to the Unesco list of intangible cultural heritage in 2009. Stitched onto a cardboard background, the lace designs abound in delicate star and wheel shapes. There's a fascinating collection of lacework on display inside.
