In 2022, what was known as the Wits Planetarium closed to undergo major technological upgrades, including the installation of a high-tech digital dome that replaced its original projector, as well as important structural changes honouring the building's history while expanding its potential use. Read about the impressive transformation here.
Ahead of the public reopening we visited the renamed Wits Anglo American Digital Dome for a taste of what's on offer, and were duly impressed. Comfortable new seating and state-of-the-art digital projectors facilitate an immersive experience into the wonders of the universe, and beyond. Part of the vision for the space is to expand the programming to deal not only with the cosmos but with history, nature, and other subjects pertinent to our lives at large. Combining education and entertainment, this is a wonderful addition to Joburg's cultural landscape.
