Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral
Piața Avram Iancu
more than a year ago
Okay, so the name is a bit of a mouthful (we tend to refer to it simply as the ‘Big Cathedral’), but a building this monumental deserves a substantial name. The Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral is the largest Romanian Orthodox house of worship in the city, a stunning juxtaposition of Byzantine and Renaissance architecture that dominates its part of the city centre like no other building could. It was completed in 1933, just in time for World War II to begin and the eventual communism to render it somewhat superfluous, but now it shines in all the manner it was intended to. The interior is plenty impressive, but it is the exterior that sets this place apart. Well, that and the whole ‘biggest Roman Orthodox Church in town’ thing.
