Sandton's oldest hotel, the Balalaika began its life in 1949 as a countryside tea room that was a popular stopover between Joburg and Pretoria. Hotel rooms were added and, decades later, as the skyscrapers of the flashy new Sandton business district began to grow around the original Balalaika, the hotel sought to retain its ‘human-scale’ and countryside feel. It's expanded to accommodate 330 rooms that are spread over two leafy low-rise courtyards, each with a swimming pool and gardens at their centre – a luxurious amount of outdoor space compared to many other newer Sandton hotels. Steeped in history, this iconic hotel celebrated its 75th birthday in October 2024.
It's also home to The Conservatory and The Bull Run restaurants, both of which are open on Christmas Day.

THE BULL RUN
An institution at Protea Hotel Balalaika Sandton, get a taste of The Bull Run's newly unveiled à la carte menu at a Christmas lunch or dinner on Wed, Dec 25 with seatings from 14:00. From fresh salads and tasty starters to meaty mains prepared exactly to your liking (this restaurant is revered as a steakhouse, of course) to decadent desserts, it's a choose-your-own adventure dining experience.
