Smack bang in the middle of town, Banja Luka’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is every bit as grand and ostentatious as the name suggests. It is immediately stirring, and its monolithic bell tower is arguably the city’s great visual landmark. The layered design of the exterior is instantly recognisable, but it is the history of the cathedral that fascinates as much as the aesthetics impress. Those aesthetics tick all of the Serbo-Byzantine design boxes, The central chandelier inside is almost the dictionary definition of dazzling. The 20th century saw the church built and destroyed before being built once again, and it is now the true centrepiece of central Banja Luka.
