Built in the 16th century when the eponymous governor set about sorting the town out, the Gazi-Husrev Beg Mosque remains the most spiritually important mosque in Sarajevo. One of the largest in the country, its position in the heart of the Baščaršija has always afforded it a position of immense importance, from its early beginnings to the current day. The mosque is a complex of gorgeous buildings serving a variety of purposes, covering education, prayer, social events and the rest, while the Gazi-Husrev Beg Museum opposite tells the story of this large historical figure. This mosque was actually the first in the world to receive electricity, doing so in 1898.
