From afar, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Kulen Vakuf looks like any other mosque in Bosnia. This isn’t to dismiss it of course — the minaret is every bit as elegant as those found in bigger cities, and the walls exude that graceful charm consistently attributed to Islamic houses of worship. As you get closer you will discover its curiosity — namely that the mosque is built above a corridor of offices and workshops. The mosque itself is entered via a small stone staircase, creating a truly unique experience in this part of the world. The mosque was built by the man whose name it takes, Sultan Ahmed, who ruled here between 1603 and 1617. It was destroyed on three separate occasions in the 20th century, making it all the more remarkable that such an impressive structure stands here today.
