Day Trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled

more than a year ago
Not only is Ljubljana a magnificent city and hugely popular with foreign tourist for short breaks, but its central location makes it super-easy for those wishing to explore other parts of the country, even if time is limited. In just a few short hours and by any method of transport visitors can enjoy a day trip further afield to discover some fascinating places of interest that would otherwise remain unseen.

Bled is undoubtedly the most popular tourist destination in Slovenia and record numbers of visitors pass through each year. Its location of 50 km from Ljubljana makes Bled within easy reach for a day trip at any time of the year. So why not hop on a bus from Ljubljana to Bled? However, with so many things to see and do we’d recommend allowing more time if possible because once you arrive you might find it hard to leave. There is, of course, the magnificent lake which itself is worth a trip, but there’s also a huge choice of places of interest, activities and events for visitors to enjoy.

Top Attractions:

Lake Bled

Impossible to miss and one could easily just take a seat and gaze out across it all day but if you enjoy a leg-stretch there is a path that circles the lake. At 6km its manageable for most folk and it provides a beautifully tranquil walk and you’ll find plenty of rest stops along the way. For those wanting an easier option there’s a tourist train that operates from May - October and is a fun way to travel. Swimming is permitted in the lake and you can also take one of the boat trips over to the island.

Bled Castle

Perched dramatically high up on a cliff overlooking the lake and town, Bled Castle is the stuff of children’s dreams. First mentioned in the year 1011, it is officially the oldest castle in Slovenia. The castle is now home to a museum and restaurant and if you’re visiting in June then experience the Medieval Days Festival is a must.

Vintgar Gorge

One of the most spectacular natural sights in Slovenia is hidden away just 4 km from Bled. Vintgar Gorge was only officially discovered in 1891, the gorge’s natural beauty was immediately recognised and work commenced on the construction of a wooden walkway along its 1.6km length. The short but breathtaking trek is definitely a must-do for anyone who visits the region! www.vintgar.si

Pletna Boats

There’s a local saying, whereby one hasn’t really visited Bled without taking a ride in one of its traditional Pletna boats. These flat bottomed boats date back to the end of the 16th century, and since then the respected profession of oarsman has been handed down through generations, with a special technique of standing rowing mastered by only a few. Bled Cream Cake

Perhaps a little strange to list a cake as a top attraction but this tasty little number deserves its place on the list. Dating back to 1953 Serbian chef Ištvan Lukačević created the recipe when he worked as head pastry chef at the Park Hotel. The cakes measure 7 x 7 x 7 cm and are made fresh everyday, it’s sweet and light and extremely popular with locals and tourists. To date, Park Hotel has produced a staggering 14 million of them, so where better to enjoy a slice than on the terrace overlooking the lake.
