Best Beaches in Athens

more than a year ago
There are dozens of beaches lining Athens’ southern suburbs, from Alimos all the way down to cape Vouliagmeni (Vouliagmeni Beach and Vouliagmeni Lake) and, should you wish to venture beyond, even further up to picturesque cape Sounion with its imposing ancient temple of Poseidon standing guard over the Saronic Gulf.

For cleaner beaches, we recommend you head to Voula or Vouliagmeni, though you could opt for swimming in Alimos, which is a bit closer to Athens, as well. There is a lovely seaside palm-lined esplanade running between Paleo Faliro and Alimos (take the tram and alight at ‘Parko Flisvou’ stop), with many cafés and beaches along the way (organised beach: Alimos Beach). Or, if you prefer to venture further out where the water is even cleaner, take the tram all the way down to its last stop in Voula and head to Voula Beach A’ or walk along the seaside all the way down to Kavouri beach, passing many beaches and stylish cafés along the way, and feast your eyes on the golden-and-blue coastal scenery unveiling itself before you.

Access to organised beaches:

Alimos Beach: Tram, Parko Flisvou stop
Voula Beach A’: Tram, last stop
Vouliagmeni Beach & Vouliagmeni Lake: Take Bus A2 from its depot on Sina Street (M Panepistimio) all the way down to Voula Town Hall. Change to buses 114/116/149
Varkiza Beach: Take the metro, alight at Dafni and take Bus 171 (Bus Teminal directly outside the metro station) all the way to its final stop.
