Though particularly famous for its beef dishes, Plachutta has become a bastion for a range of traditional Viennese food. Forgoing current culinary trends, the chefs here focus on the simple, customary dishes of this former imperial capital - particularly their famous Tafelspitz (boiled high-quality beef). While the food is deliciously simple, the prices are on the expensive side.

Food and service were excellent. Pumpkin soup totally delicious. However, if you are taking a cab t reach the restaurant, try to avoid rush hours. The cab fare was a pricey addition to the meal. Be forewarned that smoking is allowed throughout the restaurant. Since this is our first night in Vienna, I have little to compare the preparation of the food, but may add to this review after the next 3 days.

I dined at Plachutta's Gasthaus zur Oper, the company's contemporary Austrian restaurant on Walfischgasse, where I had a delicious Tafelspitz. The staff were friendly and efficient and, on being told that I had never eaten Tafelspitz before, they explained how the meal would be served and the correct way to eat it. When the food arrived the waiters were attentive and helpful and they ensured each course was served and eaten in the Austrian style. A Tafelspitz served with creamed spinach and potato rosti as sides, a bottle of water and a glass of house wine came to just under 40 euros and was worth every cent. Highly recommended.

They have excellent local fish as well. The Mohr im Hemd is also excellent. Full of proper Austrian families out for a special Sunday dinner.
