One of Vienna's last remaining real street markets, Brunnenmarkt was first established in 1873, but made permanent only in 2005. Probably the most ethnically and culturally diverse marketplace in the Austrian capital, Brunnenmarkt, together with the adjacent Yppenplatz, enthrals visitors with a wealth of colours and aromas and a babbling brook of different languages spoken around. With about 170 stores selling clothing, food, household supplies, toys and much more, this colourful market is nicknamed Vienna's "Little Istanbul" and is especially vibrant on Saturday mornings. An estimated 60 thousand shoppers come to Brunnenmarkt every week. Numerous Turkish groceries and cafes attract customers with excellent home-baked bread and pastries, as well as very reasonably priced vegetables, fruit, meat and cheese. For a good choice of fresh meat and other produce flown in directly from Turkey, drop by at the Ankara Market (Brunnengasse 46). Then stock up on freshly-baked loaves, flatbread and Turkish sweets at Trabzon Ekmek Firini Bakery (Brunnengasse 65). And in case you get hungry, there is no shortage of places to dine in the neighbourhood, mostly cosy cafés and ethnic restaurants.

Yppenmarkt, located on the lively square of Yppenplatz, has over the past decade completely merged with Brunnenmarkt and now features permanent pavilions that sell a variety of crispy veggies, fruits and exotic spices. Exciting and multicultural, Yppenmarkt attracts youthful, fashionable and artistic crowd with its atmospheric cafés, bars and restaurants, such as Muskat, An-Do Fish Restaurant, and Cafe C.I., to name just a few. In summer, the area is filled with entertainment, including live music concerts and occasional theatrical performances. With its pleasant easy-going setting, Yppenmarkt has evolved into one of the centres of Vienna's creative, internationally-oriented scene.
