Like much of the rest of North Macedonia, the area around Maleševo is rich in ancient archaeological sites, so of them well organised and excavated and others little more than neglected ruins at the ends of long dirt tracks in the middle of the wilderness. Of particular interest is the ancient fortress site at Dolno Gradište near Kočani and the former settlements of Kovacilnica, Linako and Popov Rid. For serious seekers of archaeology, the best option is to do a lot of planning in advance and to get in touch with the experts, in this case the Archaeological Society of the Republic of North Macedonia, whose website is unfortunately remains in Macedonian only but that can be navigated with the help of Google Translate.
