Hidden away in the western suburbs of the city, the peaceful and impressive Arabati Baba Tekke is the best surviving example of a Bektashi monastery in the region. The Bektashi Order is a dervish sect that fuses elements of Shia and Sufi thought into a unique blend of Islamic belief and philosophy, and this sprawling complex, originally dating from the middle of the 16th century, is still active. Feel free to stroll the grounds, visit the graves of the former baba who once gave spiritual guidance here and generally enjoy the peaceful gardens and various religious buildings scattered around the complex.
