Tirana’s unique Women's Museum, hosted in a small city centre flat, is a work of love by Elsa Ballauri, a well-known human rights activist from a prominent family that was harassed by the Sigurimi due to their "bad biography". Book your visit in advance, and you’ll get a personal tour, focusing on the lives of women in Albania over the ages, as well as some women in particular. The collection has antiquities, jewellery, clothing like the traditional xhubleta dress, and cherished items that could have landed the owners in prison. There are hopeful stories of women’s organizations emerging in the 1930s, medals awarded to “Mother heroes” who had lots of children, the awful consequences of the ban on abortions, and stories of persecution, incarceration and execution of Albanian women. Enter at the rear of the building with the Obsession shop, and walk up to the 3rd floor.
