Many Utrechters may despise people from Amsterdam (especially local football supporters), but the Amsterdam School was once incredibly popular. The Louis Hartlooper Complex is a great example of this. Built in 1926, the former police station is a state monument designed by Utrecht city architect J. I. Planjer. In 2003 the building became a cultural centre for film, debates and classes. Louis Hartlooper was one of the nation's most famous narrators and made silent films come to life with his words and gestures.
