Because of construction and renovation work on its original building in the city centre, Vredenburg will have two locations in Utrecht until 2013: Vredenburg Leidsche Rijn and Vredenburg Leeuwenbergh. Large-scale concerts will take place in Vredenburg Leidsche Rijn, while Vredenburg Leeuwenbergh will serve as a recital hall.
Vredenburg Leeuwenbergh specialises in unamplified chamber music, jazz and world music concerts, but there's also room for experimental music and young talent. It was built in 1567 as a hostel to isolate plague victims, but never served this purpose. It was used by the French army and the university and for a time even served as a church. There is a parking garage nearby on the Kruisstraat and a bus (Nr. 2, the Museumkwartier loop) stops a five-minute walk from the Leeuwenbergh.
