As an ex-teacher, Dinah Veeris knows how to tell a good story. Den Paradera literally means ‘where people feel at home’, but more importantly, this woman is a caretaker of traditional Caribbean medicine. After a five-year study of herbal medicine, Dinah felt the time was right to 'save' the local herbal history of her island. In her small, yet organised garden grow a wide variety of native plants, which you can peruse during her twice-daily tours. Veeris' treatments are a mixture of remedies used by indigenous Arawak Indians and African slaves. Traditional medicines can be bought at the shop.

It was ok. We were given a ‘guide’ (numbered paper flyer) to use to identify the plants. Sometimes it was helpful. You could tell that the garden used to be something really nice. Now, the signs are barely readable (faded and peeling), many have no signs, no water flows through the man-made ‘rivers’ to the ‘pond’ and most plants and trees needed pruning. I was a little disappointed. The woman in the store was very nice.
