A trip to Curacao isn't complete without a visit to the largest national park on the island, which lies 40km west of Willemstad. Established in 1978, Christoffel Park stretches out over an area of 2300ha providing a safe environment for a large number of rare species of flora and fauna. And if birds like the falki, warawara and the kinikini aren't among your favourites, you're sure to spot dozens of the other animals here. Two scenic paved car routes traverse this rough and dry area where the vegetation is specially adapted to this harsh climate. In addition to natural wonders, there are numerous historical and archaeological finds scattered around the park. Ruined and restored plantations and 2,000-year-old cave drawings are among its treasures. In total there are eight hiking trails varying from easy strolls to more challenging hikes such as the path to the 375m-high summit of Mt. Christoffel. Make sure you get an early start, as you're not allowed to enter after 11:00. Mountain bikes are available at the entrance gate.
