Everyone has recollections – good or bad – of his/her high school cafeteria and if you'd like a reminder take a stroll down memory lane at De Stadskantine (The City Canteen) on one of De Pijp's trendier streets. As the name suggests, the interior is a Spartan affair, but the menu is a different story. Dozens of dishes are listed (in Dutch) above the counter and thankfully the friendly staff is happy to serve as translators. Try the three affordable home cooked specials, which are easily divided into meat, fish and vegetarian categories. It's also a good place for dessert and our absolute favourite would have to be the carrot cake. Internet addicts can fire up their laptops, but bear in mind that there aren't many electrical sockets available.
