Some places just seem to exude a pleasant vibe even from the outside and this cosy brown bar is one of them. Its unusual name refers to the 12 wooden beams that support this ancient building. Once inside there's plenty more to discover including a menu with lots of surprises. Lamb in all forms, a good variety of seafood and some excellent beef dishes are all made in the open-plan kitchen, but De 12 Balcken is also an excellent place for beer lovers. Belly up to the 10m-long bar and try one of its four homemade brews or one of the other draught beers. History buffs will no doubt appreciate the panels on the wall that offer descriptions of unique places on the island, but, unfortunately, only in Dutch.
