Just before his death in 1564, Michelangelo Buonarroti was in Rome working on what today is considered his last unfinished masterpiece, The Pietà. Carved out of a single piece of marble, the sculpture depicts the figure of Christ and the Virgin encircled in a tender embrace. The whereabouts of The Pietà were a mystery for centuries, until finally it was found at the home of Marquis Giuseppe Rondinini, a Roman art collector, and purchased by the city of Milan in 1952. Recently opened to the public for the first time, the Ospedale Spagnolo (Spanish Hospital) inside Castello Sforzesco is the perfect setting in which to admire Michelangelo’s last work in quiet reverie.
