Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale)

Sometimes known as Genoa’s Versaille, this sumptuous UNESCO World Heritage palace is now home to paintings, frescoes, sculptures and tapestries. It was built in the 17th century by wealthy merchants the Balbi family but bought by the Savoys in 1823 and turned into a royal residence. There are over 200 paintings by masters such as Van Dyck, Strozzi, Tintoretto and Guercino. The spectacular Hall of Mirrors and the Throne Room are the highlight of the visit whilst the garden, with its unique harbor views, is not to be missed. The museum is run by a small team who are full of info and anecdotes, often in English.
