If you want to get in touch with ancient history while staying in Varna, you must pay a visit to the Necropolis. The burial site is located in the western industrial zone of the city and it is considered one of the key archaeological sites in the world. The oldest gold treasure (4600 BC – 4200 BC) in the world was discovered here. All the artefacts can be seen at Varna Archaeological Museum and the National Historical Museum in Sofia.

There is also a Roman site just north of Veliko Tarnovo. Hard to find and down a very bumpy dirt track but well worth a visit.
