During a storm in 2012, which destroyed parts of the salt pans and the land around Sarafovo, an ancient settlement came to light. After the storm, 12 meters of the façade of a building, 2.5m high, were revealed! Water pipes are clearly visible inside the building and it is assumed that this building is one of many in a town, because villages in the Roman Empire rarely had such large buildings with waste water pipes and paved streets. Archaeologists date the building to around the 6th century, the time of emperor Justinian.
In the stormy sea a massive object resembling a stone sarcophagus was also discovered. Archaeologists suggest that it may be that of Roman nobleman, probably governor of the ancient settlement. The assumption is that the ancient town had a port, whose peir was made of the large stone slabs that were found. . The wave, which destroyed the shoreline, also revealed a large vessel of wheat. It is possible that wheat was exported from this location, because after the capital was moved to Constantinople in 330 by Emperor Constantine, there was a significant increase in trade for the coastal towns.
There is currently no public access to these excavations but the discovery is nevertheless very exciting and we look forward to seeing more soon.
