Roaming Office – Workshop17 West Street

more than a year ago
Workshop17's Sandton co-working space couldn't be more conveniently located if you need to be in Joburg's financial district, Sandton – it's situated opposite the Sandton Gautrain station and Nelson Mandela Square

We recently visited Workshop17 West Street as part of our roaming office series. It's a day when our team is hosted to work in a new space and given an opportunity to learn about what's on offer for all those hustling in Joburg. This was the third Workshop17 space we visited – read about our experience of Workshop 17 Firestation and Workshop17 The Bank

On the day that we visited, Workshop17 celebrated its sixth birthday in this space which coincided with the launch of a newly remodeled section of boardrooms and additional hot-desking space. This Workshop17 location, which has an urban city feel with a skylight and exposed staircase that doubles as a bookshelf, attracts a more corporate crowd than the others we visited, but there were also the likes of start-ups, entrepreneurs, businesses and freelancers mainly in the tech and finance space that keep the business side of Sandton buzzing.

The building's auditorium which seats 120 people is used as a venue for interesting industry talks and launches. There are also a whopping 210 hot desks as well as seminar and meeting rooms across the three floors, as well as silent hot desks and telephone booth-style VC pods for when you need quiet time to focus and chase that deadline undistracted.

In addition to ergonomic office furniture, West Street provides a standing desk and a treadmill desk for those who prefer to stand or walk while working. There's also a hammock on the balcony and large bean bags for when you need a change of scenery or a more comfortable seating option.

Much like all of the other Workshop17 locations, West Street features the works of local artists curated by the W17 Gallery. We always enjoy seeing the art on display – works by Bevan De Wet and Caroline Suzman, as well as furniture by David Krynauw and Houtlander fill the space.

And if you're in desperate need of a coffee or snack to power through the day, café Fudio has a to-the-point menu of affordable light meals. A standout of the Sandton branch is the spacious and sunny terrace, a perfect place to enjoy the fresh air, have networking breakfasts and business lunches, or simply enjoy your break while you take in Sandton. It's also a convenient spot for clients to join you for a quick meet-up or interview.
