Zaganu
An unpasteurized beer, Zaganu is made by a Romanian independent micro-brewery near the Zaganu Mountains, with just plain and simple ingredients: water, malt, hops and yeast. Manually bottled and labelled, this is regarded as one of the best craft beers in Romania! The best place to find it is at the Romanian Craft Beer Bar in Bucharest, where you can choose the one that fits you best from Dark Beer, Zaganu Rosie(Belgian Red Ale), Pale Lager and Zaganu India Pale Ale - a bottle for every taste.
Hophead
Ever since 2015, Hophead became one of the most popular beers that everyone instantly recognizes around Romania. This beer comes from a micro-brewery based in Cluj-Napoca that was also the first craft brewery in the city. No matter your preferences, they’ve got your back, with beer varieties ranging from Blonde Ale and Pale Ale (Auto Pilot and Immigrant), to funky ones like Smoothie Indian Pale Ale and Sour Cherry Pale Ale (Grozava and Visine). This one should be right there on the top of your list and can be found in almost every respected pub in town.
Ground Zero
After becoming a well-established presence in the Romanian craft beer scene, these craft beer pioneers do not mess around when it comes to ale, their modus operandi being challenging the Romanian drinker’s perception and expectation of beer. Their must-try products are Morning Glory and Split the Pot, two Indian pale ale beers that also make a really good choice for a present, thanks to their names. Worth mentioning about them is also the fact that they’re one of the five founding breweries of the Romanian Craft Beer Producers’ Association, so if you want something authentic, they’ll hit all your checkmarks!
Hop Hooligans
The guys from Hop Hooligans just tried brewing the beer they wanted to drink. They hopped on the market with their signature craft, Crowd Control, an Indian Pale Ale that’ll delight your senses with tropical freshness and a bitter-sweet aftertaste. They’re not the first, nor the largest brewers in town, but they definitely are one of the most loved brands– everyone knows their signature drink and their fan base is ever-growing. The diversity of what they offer is so big that we’ll hit the word count with only that, but besides the one mentioned above, some really tasty and cool ones to try out are ”Dumpster Bear”, ”Why the Long Face? ” and of course, ”Earth is not Flat”.
Nemteana
Born on the Moldavian part of the country, Nemteana was born from the passion of the makers’ grandpa, a man that thought them the importance of carefully handling the ingredients you’re going to use for your drinks. They did just that and what they came up with is a nostalgic Ale that has the taste of old times. Without trying to be fancy or experimental but priding itself as being on par with German beers, this unfiltered craft won’t shy away with the strong taste and fruity aromas. If you are seeking an old and authentic beer taste, have a sip of this one!
Some other beers worth trying are Sikaru and Three Happy Brewers, both crafted in Bucharest. Sikaru has a variety of ales (from Blonde Beer to Red Beer, White Beer and Black beer with hints of chocolate, coffee and cacao) and can be found almost everywhere while the mission of Three Happy Brewers is to make fresh, pure, true-to-craft beer, recreating rare styles, their own reinterpretations of classics and some weirder things.
