Famous for its Jewish heritage, today’s Kazimierz is just as well known for its nightlife as its synagogues. In fact, aside from perhaps the ‘Cracovian cellar club,’ there is still nothing more emblematic of Kraków’s nightlife than the dive bar aesthetic of the quintessential Kazimierz 'knajpa' (bar), with its warm sepia glow, dirty walls and junk store furnishings. Though the district has diversified significantly in the decades since, when Kazimierz’s revitalisation began back in the 1990s, much of the investment came from business owners able to purchase derelict buildings, furnish them with curbside antiques, add a liquor shelf and presto! - open a dark, dishevelled bar that perfectly captured the spirit of the neighbourhood. Kazimierz quickly became synonymous with cafe/bars choked with smoke, candlelight, antiques and bohemians, where under the stewardship of alcohol one might be able to commune with a lost, forgotten world beneath the haze. As the area's clean-up, aided by the 1993 release of Schindler's List, brought more and more tourists to its historical sights, Kazimierz went through a renaissance that saw it quickly develop into Kraków's hippest neighbourhood.
Today the area is densely packed with bars, cafes, restaurants and food trucks, and there is no better place in Kraków for a night out. The compact area around Plac Nowy offers endless pub crawl possibilities, plus all the late night eating opportunities you could possibly desire. While Kazimierz's history makes it a requisite stop for tourists, it is the district's bars that give Kaz its true vitality and much of the mystique it still carries today. Below we list those venues which most define the district - the best, most 'Kazimierz' bars in Kazimierz. Na zdrowie!
