We've seen solos from them throughout the year, and now eight artists on Berman Contemporary's books coalesce in the group show Summer Muse. "This group exhibition showcases a diverse range of talents, styles, and mediums, united by the threads of femininity, imagination, and the timeless allure of the summer season," reads the curatorial text.
The featured artists are Amogelang Maepa, Athenkosi Kwinana, Chrisél Attewell, DuduBloom More, Hazel Mphande, Lee-At Meyerov, Mellaney Roberts, and Natalie de Morney.
Maepa's clay sculptures are fused with poetry and drawn from her personal experiences. "They portray the more intimate and honest parts of myself," she says. Meanwhile, Kwinana's work represents Persons with Albinism in South Africa, seeking to cultivate greater awareness and understanding.
Attewell's practice treads the line between research and playful intuition, telling stories that illuminate the social, historical, and ecological contexts of local landscapes. Through textile works, DuduBloom More explores the experiences and communities that have influenced her identity.
This group showcase is a window into what eight of the country's contemporary artists have been thinking about and experimenting with of late. In the exhibition space next door, Odette Graskie has her solo, Side Quest, also at Berman Contemporary. Read our review here.
