Traces of human settlement in the Sopot area date back to the Stone Age, and ancient graves, spearheads, ceramics, remains of food and even Arabic coins have all been uncovered during area excavations. The most important regional archaeological find however was the unearthing of the remains of this fortified hilltop settlement, right in the centre of Sopot, and believed to have been used between the 8th and 14th century. Today a visit to this branch of the Archaeological Museum involves access to the indoor exhibition hall - featuring a permanent exhibition entitled ‘The Fort in Sopot’ (PL: Grodzisko w Sopocie) as well as temporary displays; and the outdoor settlement which was reconstructed in 2000. Consisting of thatched roof wooden huts, live goats (which kids can feed) and re-enactors in period costume, the small settlement is thought to be an exact replica of the one that once stood here, and hosts workshops and educational courses for school groups, which often involve cooking in the open-air and even medieval weaponry workshops.
